I read with interest on Tun Mahathir first
and second
publication on the titled “Melayu kemana” in his blog and Prof Azmi Sharom reaction to Mahathir’s first writing. Both mature men show contrasting views on a common issue. I would like to share my thoughts on the matter.
-
Before addressing this matter in greater detail, I would like to ask these two mature men several pertinent questions. Is it important to ensure that Malay is in power or an UMNO Malay in power? Should we be focusing to have any Malay or only honest, intelligent Malay which has the best interest of the country at heart? Shouldn’t the Malays in general benefit if the best Malaysian is leading the country? Who is more important- several inner circle Malays or all Malaysian in Malaysia?
-
I don’t expect many to agree with me but I feel Mahathir in his writing emphasized and indirectly the important for the Malays to be united under UMNO. Why UMNO? Looking at the early history of UMNO, many of its leaders at the national, state and grass root leaders are patriotic to the need to help the masses. These are true Malaysian. UMNO in its current form has betrayed the Malays and Malaysian. They have put the country second to their own personal interest. How else can you explain the unreasonable richness of some of their leaders?
-
For e.g. under the previous administration, any UMNO branch leaders sitting on local council would have earn contracts. Isn’t it UMNO Malays that ruled Selangor deforested the forest, shared land among them and make the many state GLC bankrupt? Wasn’t it an UMNO Malay that assigned land, water, parking space that belongs to the State and GLC to several RM 2 companies? I don’t understand why the many UMNO ordinary members who are Malays still keep this kind of Malay in office? They have become so weak that they cannot identify and kick immoral and corrupted leaders. They should have kicked them out.
-
Not all UMNO leaders are bad and not all PR leaders are good? As ordinary person I would vote for a holy intelligent Chinese or Indian Christian against corrupt Malay anytime. As an illustration, if Shahrir Samad were to contest against Azmin Ali in BA, without doubt I would have given my vote to Shahrir because I believe Shahrir is far more intelligent and understand the people needs more clearly. The point I am trying to make that we should be looking for a better person than a better Malay.
-
When Mahathir compared the Malays in Singapore and the Malays in Malaysia, he always planted the idea that the Malays are worse off in Singapore. I have many Malay friends in Singapore that would disagree with Mahathir anytime. Let me put it this way, despite the limited democracy in Singapore, the country leaders are not perceived as corrupted. The country infrastructure is world class. Most Singaporeans own a home. The contrast can be said about Malaysia. Ask any Malay Malaysian and find out their views whether they think the Singapore Premier Lee Hsien Long or Malaysia PM Najib is more corrupted and a better person?
Kemana Melayu?

kemana melayu?
Well, straight to poverty if you asked me. With currently 60% of the population and growing fast (averaging 5-6kids versus the non-malay 2), the melayu leaders will bankrupt this country. The next generation melayu will blame their parents & grandparents for keeping the corrupted melayu politicians/leaders and their cronies (melayu&non-melayu) in power to steal the rakyak & country blind!
Thats where the melayu will be heading.
My take on the BN whip being applied ALL THE TIME: “This is PURE NONSENSE to me and we Malaysians have seen how the whip plus their two-third majority had been greatly abused.”
Let me ask you Doctor, how much have Sharir being in UMNO has contributed to the mutilation of our Constitution?
More Doctor, drawing your attention to the proposal to extend that bill to extend the retirement age of the Election Commission chairman from 65 to 66 was hurriedly tabled at the Parliament to keep that useless chairman for the March 08 election, I am sure you and many rakyat don’t want that passed. I bet you Sharir voted for that bill.
Another one – SCC (Special Complaints Bill), a much watered down version of a greatly needed (and promised) IPCMC, I am confident that if you are asked, you would want Sharir to vote against that bill as we all want IPCMC implemented. And I can almost guarantee you that Sharir voted for that bill.
I have taken the trouble to question Chew Mei Fun and her responses all support what I have mentioned above. You can read about how she, typical of a BN MP tried to justify the above unsuccessfully over at DAP whip versus BN whip
Doctor, I put it to you that in Parliament when an issue that is detrimental to the rakyat arises, Shahrir will vote with BN and vote according to the interest of the rakyat because of the BN whip which is applied all the time.
Peter
1. suggest you do some research. Shahrir has voted against the government policy during mahathir’s and pak lah era. That is why he is out of the cabinet. In any case, I use shahril as an illustration.
Voted against government policy during Pak Lah’s era in the Parliament where it counts? Tell me about it as I have never heard of that. See my latest comment 11:36AM
No, Shahrir has NEVER voted against any Bill in Parliament. If he did tell me when and what Bill. There was once he resigned as Backbenches Club Chairman, I think but NEVER voted against a Bill.
Sam01
(1) Research back in time during Mahathirs time and you will find it
(2) Why did Shahrir Samad resign as BB Club Chairman? What does it mean if he resigned?
Dr. Rafick, here is what I learned about DAP’s policy on the Whip from Why I support DAP (and PR) and not BN:
Where the issue concerns party policy, the MP must vote according to party line
Where the issue is in the party manifesto (a document stating what the party would do given to voters prior to an election), the MP must vote consistent to what is stated in the manifesto
Where the issue is a matter of conscience, for example religion, the MP is free to vote according to conscience
the former Parliamentary Secretary to YB Lim Kit Siang also said that in the past, where something tabled at the Parliament was in the interest of the country, they have voted with the BN (Barisan Nasional)
Peter
A. I read the link.
B. I quote what is written: “The whip (an obligation for a party’s MP) is:
1. Where the issue concerns party policy, the MP must vote according to party line
2. Where the issue is in the party manifesto (a document stating what the party would do given to
voters prior to an election), the MP must vote consistent to what is stated in the manifesto
3. Where the issue is a matter of conscience, for example religion, the MP is free to vote according to
conscience
C. Dont you think that No 1 and No 2 is rigid. Issues from item No 3 can be made as item 1 and 2 and issue No 2 can be made into No 1 and there will be no freedom to vote.
1,2.3 are known well before a voter gets to cast that vote. So a voter knows what that DAP candidate represent.
An issue involving conscience is not likely to be in 1,2 or 3
Dear Sam01 – Your comments shows that you have misunderstood me. Allow me to explain
What can Shahrir do if you vote for him? In a system that is utterly corrupted and immoral to the core, one swallow cannot make a difference.
Dr Rafick – I use shahrir samad as an illustration in trying to explain my point that we need to vote the RIGHT INDIVIDUAL and NOT PARTY. Why do you think Shahrir Samad survives as an MP for many years despite his disagreement with Mahathir and subsequently Pak Lah and Najib? He is still elected because the local knows what he does for them. I dont want to give everything in a silver platter to you. Suggest you do some research on it. Btw do you know that Shahrir is the brother of Khalid Samad (PAS MP Shah Alam)? If you like Khalid, you must appreciate that this two individuals are from the same stock
Tell me what can Kuli, Shahrir or Sabri (Sakmongkol) contribute in UMNO to eradicate corruption? NOTHING!! You think they dare even speak against Corruption at their party AGM?
Dr Rafick-Maybe it need more than 3 individuals to clean UMNO. If you read Ku Li latest writing, he made it clear on his stand on corruption
Please don’t be naive and look at individual goodness. Look at the larger picture.
Dr R- You are assuming that PR reps are clean… suggest you think again. There are plenty of corrupt people in there as well.
The only solution is for us to vote out UMNO – lock, stock and barrel.
Dr Rafick – I disagree with you. The only way is that we vote only the RIGHT people with ACCEPTABLE values into office. As mentioned in my article para 5, I vote for candidate even though he is a non muslim.
I know you don’t like Azmin but why give your vote to UMNO to spite Azmin? I would rather spoil my vote then vote for the holiest man in UMNO – because he cannot do a damn thing when the entire system is engulfed in corruption.
Dr Rafick – I DISAGREE with you. I neither like or dislike Azmin Ali. I judge him based on his performance as ADUN in BA and MP in GOMBAK. Since 2008, his performance is not up to expectation. By the way, let me ask you to do one simple test. Send Azmin Ali an SMS or email and see how fast he reply. Ask him if he support KLORR that pass through the Klang Gate Damn. Ask him to make a public stand on this matter. You are very lucky if you get a reply. That would be a good start. An MP and ADUN should be contactable.
As a vote of confidence for PR Government in Selangor, overall they are much better than the previous Selangor government despite operating in a hostile environment.
Thanks for the clarification. Let us continue to differ in our views.
Yes, I know Khalid and Shahrir are brothers but Khalid stands head and shoulders above his brother on principles and morality. My respects for Khalid is strong indeed.
If Shahrir has principles and a high standard of morality he would resign from UMNO, a party which is blatantly corrupted.
Tell me when did Shahrir speak up against injustice, ISA, destruction of non Muslim places of worship, abuse of the Judiciary, against the take over of Perak, Sodomy ll, corruption in by elections by BN, Perkasa’s antics, against the use of ‘Allah’ by non-Muslims.
Doc, I reckon you will even vote for an UMNO devil if he stands against Azmin.
Shahrir cannot sit in a cesspool and say he is clean.
Sam01
(1) You are too presumptuous.
(2) I suppose “I will vote the devil” IF the devil can show that he is better than Azmin. May I suggest you do an in-depth research on Azmin as well and you will see that he is not as “holy” as you think. I suggest that you also ask Azmin on his stand on KLORR that will put the entire water supply system in the Klang Gates Dam at risk of Klang Valley population.
(3) If you want Azmin number and email address, please email me at drrafick@gmail.com
Again, as I said i use Shahrir samad as an illustration. We really need to start voting the right people and not a flag and a brand. You must not forget about the Perak, Penang and Kedah PR reps that was voted in along the party lines. Hopefully their defections means the importance of putting the right people with principles.
drrafick,
1. When Shahrir resign his MP seat during the 80′s, he resign because of his principle and believes.
2. At that time when Sharir resign, he was log with the entire government machinery and BN and UMNO was really strong politically.
3. Sharir was the first MP whom as far as I know resign from his MP seat JB (mind it he was a BN (UMNO) MP).He was young then, his star was rising then yet on his believes and struggle he was everready to for go and fight ‘alone’.
4. Sharir was the FIRST BN MP who resign and fought back as an INDEPENDENT and won back his “throne” JB seat.
5. As far as I can recollect he is the ONLY Minister whom are willing and ready to resign his ministerial post on matter of principle if something goes very wrong in his Ministry. He take accountability on his very shoulder.
6. He lost his supreme council seat (UMNO) ,he resign his ministrial post ,whereas there are plenty of them who lost everything BUT still clinging to the power or still hope and doing canvassing.
7. When Sharir resign his MP seat….it was his seat won by him in an election….not his wife who resign to make way for him.
8. At that time, most of the opposition leaders who are now crying “ANGEL” was determined to finish off Sharir. The crying ANGEL was then the “BLUE EYE ANGEL BOY” of that era.
9. What the blue eye angel boy was doing all that time for almost 20 years. Where was anything that called ..principle….democrasy…human right…anti corruption…nepotism or whatever lah doing or done?. The blue eye boy do NOT resign but was SACK but not Sharir.
10. I too will vote for a principle man like Sharir no matter which political body one belong to.
PS
Thank you for the summary. There are a lot more that Shahrir did but I guess your summary should be enough that I don’t have to penned down in details for Peter and Sam01 to appreciate my point. I chose based on individuals and not on some damn (excuse my french) logo or a flag.
Shahrir won the seat because he had the entire banking on the yet to be formed Semangat 46 team – Tunku Razaliegh and even Tunku Abdul Rahman campaigned for him. The entire Kuli team campaigned for him in that election which he won by some 12,000 votes.
Without the 2 Tunkus he would have made it.
Shahrir later rejoined UMNO Baru.
So much for his greatness.
Sam01
Your argument has merit but he DID NOT win purely because of Tunku and Tengku!
,,,the Malay Malaysian is a confused lot of people, they are everybody but no body except for the bloody mafia Putras in Putrajaya !.
,,,they are fighting for their so called stupid RIGHTS to be the under dogs too !. Some claimed to be more Islamic than others and dress up more Arabic than the Arabs themselves. Most or rather majority are hypocrites but claim not to be one. Pretty good in taking short cuts plus ready to blame the world and everyone except themselves. Cannot see another successful individual Malay/Chine/Indian/Dayak Malaysian to stand-up and sharing their good experience with life and living. Slow and backwards in THINKING too except for the very very few. Generally, “Tak boleh tengok orang lain senang ?.”…Cumburu buta kot !!
,,,the Melayu and in fact, the rest too, in general must change their mindset and attitude, plus take more “Actions” than just talking/dreaming about it until even the cows refused to come home.
,,,there is still hope for this Malaysian nation too, just forget about racialists politics and policies.
…plus stop sitting on that Arabic high horse too for God’s sake.
,,,PLEASE, dear Malay Malaysian just get real and act as an human being like the rest of bro./sis. Malaysian ?. There is no free lunch too yaa. Its hard work plus blood sweat and tears….the only road to success-lah. BUT be smart at it too.
… and SAY NO TO DIRTY CORRUPTED POLITICIANS TOO, vote them out in GE 13.
Corruption at high level and patronage exist in Singapore except that common people, the majority is not marginalised as in Malaysia. The difference is is done through competency and in championing national interest rather for individuals gain.
A Malay who want’s to compare the malay’s in Singapore and in the P.M. , is fine……they have merits to compare …., but how can a DOM who claims he is Malay talk about malay’s he should be talking about Keralies in India and also his left over siblings in malaysia,.
Tak cukup masa lagi……, his children can talk about the malays……, but the DOM has taken all of us for a ride….., sad to say the Malay’s just were dump to follow suit.
Just imagine a 2nd generation Mamak talking about
“Kemana Melayu “……., the malay’s were take as idiot’s because they to one who profess their religion as one….., sad to say Mamak had his own agendda.
Care to pay his son’s house for a visit….., then you all Malay’s will know what ” Kemana Melayu ” means….?
Take should be taken and To should read took and also agendda should be agenda. Sorry.
KEMANA MELAYU…..?.
TUN kemana Keling dari estate….., yang sekarang jadi ganster and pembunuh upahan……., were you not the cause for their predictment……, a Wise guy you call yourself…, but you are a arsehole towards are that the indians are facing……, more Kalimuthu and not……, but you have clean youself to become a Kacuk Malay.
It should read towards what the indians are facing.
A Old Fox is given a longer time to kick the bucket so that he can see the down fall of his self created empire prior to his DEMISE….
Balasi 1806.
Doctor, may I put it to you that the most urgent thing for Malaysia at this point of time is reform that can only come by kicking the ***UMNO out from Putrajaya, put in Pakatan Rakyat, get Pakatan rakyat to change bad laws and put in good ones plus put into a system of check and balance so that the individual become less important and the system (of check and balance) become more important. The most important thing at this point of time is to create a 2 party/coalition situation for Malaysia for the 2 of them to check the other from excesses.
After that when that is in place, perhaps emphasis and priorities can change and for all you know, the next election I may even vote for a truly reformed BN if PR cannot do the job.
I put it to you doctor we must at least give PR this 1 go at carrying out badly needed reform and we have to trust them to be more careful in selecting candidates the next general election. March 08 was an exceptional time and the opposition when it was not easy to get people to stand as an opposition candidate and it was a choice of either conceeding a walkover or putting someone willing to stand.
Doctor, can you answer my point about the BN whip. My stand is as long as BN whip applies all the time, I will never vote BN. Remember that Malacca “close one eye” clearcut abuse of power case where BN MPs all had to toe the line?
Peter
(1) You are to focus on UMNO i.e. the brand. I agree with you that many UMNO leaders are bad but as I said not all PR members are good. As I said earlier, we should vote for the best person into office. A person that think about the country and the people first then his own self interest. A person who has the necessary skills and capabilities to manage this nation forward. Whether this person is from UMNO or PR is immaterial. In the absence of decent candidate, chose the lesser between the two evils
Yes Doctor, the quality of a person is important, but here in Malaysia, the quality of a BN MP is compromised by the rigid BN whip. Toe the line or out you go. So a BN MP as I said many times is constrained and not totally free to act and vote according conscience. So to say whether a person is from UMNO/BN or not is not totally immaterial. Can you not concede this point?
The whip is being practice by all parties. In Selangor state assembly, I believe is Azmin Ali is PR Ketua Whip. This is a practice that also present in the UK system. I believe all MP’s must think and act independently in parliament based on their assessment
Dr Rafick,
I am afraid you probably too busy to read my comments in detail and probably too busy too to surf over to Why I support PR and not BN where I related asking about the DAP policy on this whip business. Yes DAP and I assume PR also have their whip but Lim Kit Siang and 1 other have said that where the issue relates to conscience, their MP can vote according to conscience.
I remember distinctly there had been issues in Parliament where BN MP wanted to vote according to conscience but were warned by BN whip to toe the line. I also distinctly remember reading that BN whip is applied ALL THE TIME
peter,
,,,indeed you point taken. Lets point out the hypocrites and vote them out ?….however to be based on facts too-lah, hear say or the likes might be unfair to the individuals concerned.
,,,am apolitical by nature but i can’t run away from politics and will utilize my rights in the ballot box.
,,,and NEVER say never cos. things can change, WE together can make the change and it starts within oneself.
,,,BUT, i find it bloody hard to trust any malaysian politicians nowadays except the very few !. Which still i find hard to identify right now unfortunately. Most are like snakes, they shed their skin regularly. ,,,time is passing and the world changing yet our bloody politicians can’t wake-up to its reality !.
,,,Our once progressive nation has gone obsolute, good for the scrap yard with these kind of poor leadership. We have as a nation fallen behind, because others are moving forward fast.
,,,The business of life and living is to go forward. Why the sudden stagnation ? It takes courage to change too. BUT i don’t see any much of it from our present so called political leaders from both side of the coin too.
,,,my guess many fear for change, they are too complacent to move and they dislike uncertainty. Or they are just plain corrupted themselves ?.
,,,its about time, we the rakyat put a STOP to it via the ballot box soon enough.
The Malay’s have been taken for a ride so long that they are o naive …….., but then again that’s what the Mamak wanted malay’s in UMNO to be…., save for the Dynasty of Razak and Hussien.
How can A Tongkang Mamak claim to be a Malay and dictate term’s…for the Malay’s….if he is not in benefit..?
Never trust a Kacuk….., for he will sell himself…..now he is more intrested to make sure his son the corrupt inherit’s Putrajaya after Najib, Hisham ……, but the old guy fail to realise that Putrajaya will be Hell after Najib….., WHY ?
For all the wrong reasons.
drrafick,
your article contents are ok but the poll daddy comparison is wrong.
there are not always a correct answer for YES or NO questions.
PS
I believe my polls is fair. It is about public perception where the readers compare the two leaders
Doctor, I wonder if your preference of Sharir over Azmin is because of your disappointment over some local Bukit Antarabangsa issue? Isn’t the role of an MP to put good law in and keep bad law out more and national issues more important than local issues? Are you sort of leaning over to preference for “longkang MP” to take care of your clogged drains and uncut grass?
Peter
I look at elected reps performance objectively and not their ability to clean the longkang! The clogged drains is the responsibility of MPAJ. You should know that! Just keep reading as very soon I will release a posting of my assessment of Azmin as ADUN BA.
Of course the Singapore Malays are worse off than the Malaysian Malays because they don’t have Dr. M and UMNO, the supreme leaders and the sole salvation of the Malay race!
“if Shahrir Samad were to contest against Azmin Ali in BA, without doubt I would have given my vote to Shahrir because I believe Shahrir is far more intelligent and understand the people needs more clearly.”
Doctor, can I “debate” this with you? Maybe I copy you and put it in point form:
1.May I ask how often Shahrir has spoken against the blatant corruption and misuse of power by his party comrades, against the many scandals and pure robbery (PKFZ Scorpene etc)?
2. If a bill (eg redrawing constituent boundaries, building new Parliament building, bill to extend a hopeless Election Commission chairman by one year just to keep him for a crucial election etc.) is put to a vote in Parliament which the public don’t want, how will he vote?
3. May I draw your attention to the BN whip where any bill rubbish or not put to the vote by BN they must vote for
4. Any bill even if good for the nation proposed by the opposition, they must vote against?
5. Under such a condition, can a BN MP really represent his constituency?
6. Under the BN whip, isn’t a BN MP representing UMNO and not the public?
7. May I draw your attention to Why I support PR and not BN where it was mentioned that when Lim Kit Siang was questioned on the whip, he said that where it concern party policy, MP must toe the line, but where it involved conscience, the MP can vote according to conscience. Isn’t this a far cry from BN insistance on the whip all the time?
May I suggest you research on the Shahrir samad background and his in and out of the cabinet. You will find your answer there.
On your vote for along party lines and not specific individuals worries me. History over the last 2 years has shown the impact of electing such individuals.
I dont vote for party. I vote for individuals
Doctor, I have good feelings about Sharir as I had benefited when he was Federal Territory Minister, but after what UMNO had done to this country, that is not sufficient to influence me to support him as long as current situation persist.
Regarding his ins and outs you probably have it at your fingertips. Would you care to share them with us?
Doctor, we all know that Sharir was brave enough to resign and recontest when he could not get along with that Mamakutty. Perhaps he is the better of the gang of thieves. What I am most interested in is how he voted on varies controversial issues. Would you have access to that?
aaa doc,trc bhd dekat sri ukay tu,it is shahrir’s samad,

trc bhd was kontraktor ‘berwibawa’ that sell out

sheikh qardawi and the ben laden group, amin rais and leng chan are much
more comfortable with yb azmin.
rights to write may need to be at raja
petra’s level…but then again maybe petra
gets all info from yb az?
you think?
Well said, doc. This senile old fox has to be crucified for his evil intention (and his evil deeds for the past 30 years) that will cause the whole generation maybe 100 years or beyond to repair the damage he has done (or beyond repair?). Nazri is right in naming this old fox as the number one extremist (anyway, few years ago, Nazri called him the Greatest Statesman. What an irony). By the way, has our PM’s kitty got a name? Mr.Sakmongkol AK47 named it TEMUJIN, but not many people knew who was this guy, I would love to suggest a more common household name: ROSE MAM @ C4 ALTUYAA JIBBEE. With this POWER-PACKED name, hope that this kitty when grown up will be able to catch more ‘CORRUPTED RATS’. Also, hope that Mr. AK47 love this name as well, after all, cats can have many names, right?
